Houston’s Art Car parade was this past weekend. For those who have never been to Art Car, people take cars and decorate them for the yearly parade. Anyone can enter an Art Car and some organizations have Art Cars decorated by their staff/members. Houston’s is the oldest and largest Art Car parade (22 years this year), but there are Art Car parades all over the world. Some of these creations are WILD in both form, color, materials used to decorate and flashy, shiny materials (think psychedelic sensory overload).

What’s a jeepney? It’s a form of public transportation popular in the Philippines. Originally, they were WWII jeeps that were converted to haul multiple people. The owners of the jeepneys would decorate as they deem fit – lots of bright colors and lots of highly reflective chrome (once again, think psychedelic sensory overload).

So while Houston’s Art Cars are the oldest in the parade circuit, they are not the oldest fantastical creations on 4 (or more) wheels. I think the Philippines’ jeepneys claims that honor.

Ok, ok, ok…it has been awhile since I’ve updated this blog. So here’s a pic from this past weekend. The event was my sister-in-law’s baby shower and my cousin (pictured above with Jock) from Portland, OR came down for the weekend. I’ll be posting more in the near future.

I know, not the best pic I’ve taken. This is taken from my iPhone sometime Saturday afternoon (Ike stormed through Houston early Saturday morning). This is what Braes Bayou looked like immediately post-Ike. Luckily it’s draining faster than it used to because the following day after this pic was taken, a thunderstorm moved in and flooded parts of Houston (again).

This was taken on rampart of Ft. Santiago in Manila, overlooking the Pasig River. It’s a light post with a statue of a soldier. The light post isn’t straight upright anymore and since the statue is physically part of the light post, he’s leaning too. It looks like he’s just hanging out and chillin’ by the river. (I found it quite humorous.)
